Counseling

I offer a safe, healing environment to explore the issues in your life that you want to change. If you are tired of struggling alone, or don’t know where to begin, I encourage you to reach out.  I welcome you with an open heart and honor being part of this journey to wholeness. Together, we can decide what processes might be most helpful in making the changes you want.  My approach to therapy is embodied and holistic.  In addition to just talking about issues, you will learn powerful techniques using guided imagery, breath, hypnotherapy, and mindfulness to help you regulate emotions and create new patterns in life.

Talk therapy taps into the logical, rational part of our mind, but our emotions and the “forgotten” roots of many on our patterns are stored in the subconscious mind and body. Learning how to access the wisdom of the body can bring great healing.  The process of heart centered hypnotherapy allows one to enter a state of deep relaxation and follow the thread of an issue back to its origin.  For example, a person who is struggling with overeating and sugar cravings would locate the sensations of craving in her body, and travel back to the first time she experienced similar sensations.  Perhaps she was fed ice cream to keep her quiet when her alcoholic father was raging. She learned that her anger was unacceptable and it was better to keep her emotions stuffed with sweets.  In the hypnotic state, she can form a new, more healthy belief and nurture those unmet needs she had.  With her emotional needs taken care of, she is now much more likely to be able to sustain healthy choices.  The most common thing people say when they do hypnotherapy is “I had no idea that was the issue!”  When issues or habits are resistant to change, there are frequently underlying emotional needs or defenses.

What is a hypnotherapy session like?  This reflection may help. “Going into my first hypnotherapy session I had no idea what to expect. However, Rahmana had a powerfully soothing and all accepting presence. It let me know I was safe to explore the inner depths of my psyche in all it’s nakedness with her guiding presence of support. I found layers of my self I had never given myself permission to access. In this place of discovery I was able to give expression and release to these buried sentiments and greatly lighten my load. I am so grateful we have such a great resource in community to facilitate healing. Thank you Rahmana!!”

Trauma or chronic stress in childhood has lifelong effects on physical and emotional well-being. The Adverse Childhood Experiences study showed that nearly two thirds of adults in the United States have experienced at least one risk factor. High ACE scores cause adult onset of chronic disease, such as cancer and heart disease, as well as mental illness, violence and being a victim of violence.  You can check your score on this website.  Clearly, it is important that we heal these childhood wounds.  Psychotherapy is a vital part of this process.

I work with my clients to evaluate all areas of their life and see where balance needs to be restored. More and more research is coming out confirming that lifestyle changes such as exercise, time in nature, whole foods, mindfulness and gratitude practices are very effective at promoting  well being and treating mental or emotional illness.

At different points in our lifetime, we will be faced with a crisis and it may feel like our life is crumbling.  The event could be an illness, divorce, job loss, or something we perceive to be positive such as a marriage or birth of a child.  On the other side of this event, however, the old ways of being no longer work.  We can feel very disoriented and confused about how to proceed.  Some people are not able to regain their footing, and others use the opportunity to find meaning in the event and its aftermath and grow in new ways.  Having support and the skills to tolerate the uncertainty and find a new equilibrium can turn this crisis into an initiation into a new way of being.  Having been though a number of these initiations, I am honored to walk with you through yours.
